The Night Cleaner

A documentaary short film by Blair Fukumura

The Film

As the night cleaner in Canada’s busiest gay bathhouse, Travis has grown accustomed to the unusual duties that befall an employee in such a testosterone charged environment. With good humour and a touch of shyness, Travis takes the audience on an amusing, and sometimes harrowing tour through his nightly duties. His twilight tour shines a light on the inner workings of bathhouse culture, and addresses ideas of disposable sex, gay male bonding, and heterosexual interpretations of gay male spaces.

Director’s Message

The Night Cleaner is a disarmingly sweet and charming anecdote told from the point of view of a rarely sought out voice in the LGBTQ community, the bathhouse employee. The shadowy and unseen team of men who have maintained these institutions for decades have been the keepers of many secrets, in my view a natural and untapped repository for insights on gay male culture.

At first, Travis’ off handed and factual recounting of his typical nightly duties seems outrageous, even shocking, but his judgement free tone quickly settles the viewer, and allows larger ideas to bubble to the surface. As gay neighbourhoods shrink, and queer culture becomes absorbed into mainstream media, is the bathhouse both the historical first frontier and final oasis for gay male sexuality?
